Job Overview
The Township of Langley is currently recruiting for up to twelve Paid Call Firefighters to join our team of professionals in the Protective Services - Fire Division. Reporting to the assigned Officer(s), Paid Call Firefighters work as part of a team of career and Paid Call Firefighters and Fire Department personnel to achieve an efficient and effective Fire Department.  This is accomplished through reliable performance of firefighting, maintenance, education, training, and by observing and complying with municipal policies, department operating guidelines and recognized safety practices. 

Responsibilities

  • Perform firefighting,  first aid and related services
  • Drive and operate fire department apparatus, and equipment as assigned
  • Maintain cleanliness of the equipment and facilities, grounds,  apparatus, turnout gear and uniforms 
  • Participate in training, drills and practice sessions with department career and paid call personnel
  • Participate in public relations and educational program events as required
  • Perform related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superior officers, career, and other paid call firefighters
  • Ability to communicate with the public in a courteous and professional manner
  • Enthusiastic and have the ability to react quickly, evaluate situations, communicate information and perform duties calmly and effectively under adverse and dangerous conditions
  •  Ability to perform prolonged and arduous work under difficult conditions 

Preference will be given to candidates who reside in the Township of Langley, available to attend daytime incidents and evening practice sessions and are able to respond to calls on a year-round basis.
Successful candidates must meet the following conditions of employment:
•    19 years of age or older 
•    Legally entitled to work in Canada
•    Reside in the Township of Langley 
•    No criminal record (a completed RCMP Police Information Check will be required for those that successfully pass the interview process)

At the time of hire, Paid Call Firefighters may be assigned to any of the Fire Department fire halls based on operational needs. They may be subsequently reassigned to a different fire hall at any time during their tenure with the Fire Department.

Successful candidates are required to commit to attending the department’s scheduled 6-week recruit training program. The recruit training program will run from September 17, 2024 to November 3, 2024.  The training consists of 3-hour sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings beginning at 19:00, and 8-hour sessions on Saturdays and Sundays beginning at 08:00. 

Required Certifications/Licenses 
Candidates must have the following valid and current certifications/licenses (must be valid at the time the posting closes) and these must be attached with your application. 

  • BC Class 5 (full privilege) Driver’s License. You must include with your application a current Personal Driving Record (select the 5-year option if obtaining online) that has been obtained within 6 months of the closing date. To obtain a copy of your Personal Driving Record, please contact ICBC directly or the driving authority where you reside. Please note that a copy of your Driver’s License and the Driver Factor Report will not be accepted.
